Home Town Celebration

Southern Weddings Magazine V10

As you may remember, I had the privilege of photographing an editorial that landed on the cover of Southern Weddings magazine in 2016. When the SW girls invited Lydia and I to join them in Laurel, Mississippi for a shoot for their tenth anniversary issue last year, we couldn’t say yes quickly enough—even though we knew we would have one-month-old Gideon in tow! We ended up bringing the whole family (including my mother!) with us, so along with some amazing career memories, we made some precious family memories through this experience.

The story of this editorial surrounded a sweet bride and groom who planned a wedding inspired by the town where they grew up and fell in love. Thanks to Erin and Ben Napier of HGTV’s Home Town fame, Laurel has received plenty of national attention recently, and as soon we arrived, we understood why. It was one of the nicest, most hospitable towns I’ve ever visited, and it made planning and photographing a shoot that celebrated the locale easy. There were so many charming, perfectly Southern settings, including but not limited to Laurel First United Methodist Church where we snapped ceremony portraits, The Rogers-Green House lawn where our reception was set, and even the front porch of some friendly local residents who later joined our team for dinner.  While I loved photographing the charming details, like the lemonade stand, the picnic in the back of Ben’s truck, and the gingham bridesmaid dresses, my favorite subjects had to be our own Prudence and James, who posed as a flower girl and ring bearer!

We are so thankful to Southern Weddings for their support of our business over the years. It was an honor to be featured in their tenth issue and we especially enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with their kind, talented, and intentional team. I hope you love the photographs from this shoot as much I loved capturing them!

“This was the second magazine editorial we had the pleasure of working with Davy on, and when we wrapped our first project together (that made it on the cover of our ninth magazine!), we knew it wouldn’t be our last. In addition to flawless final images, Davy brings contagious enthusiasm, a servant’s heart, and a sense of fun and adventure to every shoot. We always look forward to our time together, and start scheming the next collaboration before we’ve finished the current one!” – Emily, Southern Weddings Creative Director
